Troubleshooting Your System

Your BookAccents Software is extremely data intensive.  It is a serious database application requiring system hardware and software that is functioning perfectly.  Very intensive error checking is built in, and BookAccents will generally abort, rather than suing corrupted data, and further compounding any problems.

 

Please take heart knowing that BookAccents will perform flawlessly, if everything is performing perfectly on your PC.

 

In todays world, there are several factors affecting the performance of your computer:

 

  1. The hardware has become so cheap that all quality control is out the window (pardon the pun).

  2. The Windows Operating System is still not 100% reliable.

  3. Each additional piece of hardware that you install on you computer requires some third party driver, etc.  Many of these are incompatible with others that you may have installed on the same computer.

  4. You system is being constantly attacked by outsiders trying to do it harm by infecting it with viruses, or trying to obtain valuable information about you via Trojan Horses installed when you install Free Software.

  5. You Internet and/or LAN has a faulty component introducing junk or noise into your data packets.

  6. You do not have sufficient memory installed for the amount of work that you want you computer to do at any given time.

  7. You are using your computer to play games in addition to using it for business programs.

 


 

 

The Art of Troubleshooting.

 

 

Unfortunately, we are not able to visit your installation to investigate each outage or problem.  Therefore, it is up to you to help us solve any problems that might occur.  Although Microsoft has made a great deal of progress in the past few years with the Introduction of XP Pro with Support pack 2 (SP2) it can still be very difficult to keep your hardware and operating system running correctly.  

 

Once you finally get your system working correctly, DO NOT PLAY WITH IT.  This is your business computer, and not intended as a toy.  It seldom matters that while you are playing some space cadet game, your thaser misfires and you loose the mother ship.  When your database become corrupted, you have a big problem.  In almost every circumstance it is the fault of the Operating System.  Someone has loaded something they shouldn't have and it has corrupted everything else.

 

Please be sure that BookAccents has been tested under fire, and once installed correctly on a healthy computer and operating system, it will function error free.... unless you allow someone to play with it.  We have no control over third party software, Spyware and viruses.

Everyone knows a computer expert.  He is probably related to your wife (or husband) in some manner, shape, or form, isn't he?  He just can't find a job in the computer industry, so he is selling insurance until he does.  We have been in the computer business since the late 60's, and have met hundreds of these guys.  Keep them away from your computer.

 

As difficult is it may be, keeps you children away from your computer too.  Buy them a new Corvette to play with instead.

 

 

 

 

The single most important action you can take if you start having a problem is to maintain a precise and complete error log.  Record exactly what you were doing at the time of the problem, who was using the system, what else might be running, what time was it, etc.  Record the error number if displayed.

 

A checklist:  These are some of the things we have found in the past to cause problems, and the possible cure for them.

 

Symptoms

Possible Resolution

I cannot launch BookAccents

  1. It is already launched on your computer.  Bring down the running version, and retry.

  2. You have moved your database files.  Put the files back where they belong, and retry.

  3. You have not paid your monthly fees, and we are blocking you from the server.  Contact us and correct this problem.

  4. You have somehow removed all of the information from one or more of your database files.  Contact us for held in reloading your files from backup.

  5. You have a virus.  Remove the virus, and restore your computer operation system and programs to a usable state.

  6. Reboot Windows.

  7. Are you sure you are using Windows XP Pro SP2?

BookAccents runs very Slowly

  1. Your Internet connection is having a bad day.  Contact your supplier

  2. You have a Spyware program causing havoc.   We suggest that you get rid of all Spyware Programs. see Spyware Software

  3. You do not have enough RAM to accomplish all of the task you are asking.  Generally, you need a minimum of 256 MB, 512 is sometimes required.

  4. In a multi-user environment, you have reached the limit for a Peer-to-Peer connection.  Consider a dedicated server.

  5. Reboot Windows.

  6. Are you sure you are using Windows XP Pro SP2?

BookAccents Aborts.

This is the hardest problem to resolve.   Currently there are several known causes.

  1. There are times when the Special Order will abort when it cannot find the book that you are reordering.   We are working on a remedy for this.

  2. Any type of hardware failure might cause this. Over the years, we have found that components of your LAN may be starting to intermittently cause errors.  The software aborts rather than going on, processing with invalid data.

  3. Spyware programs are competing for the same system resources that we need to execute. Spyware Software

  4. Reboot Windows.

  5. Are you sure you are using Windows XP Pro SP2?

You are printing on an "unexpected" printer.

  1. You have your invoicing printer configured as your label printer, or visa-versa.  This can happen when you are using other software on the same computer to print.  Check the documentation, and reconnoitre the printers.

  2. In the case of shared printers, someone has changed the shared settings.

Your Zebra Label printer is not printing correctly.

  1. You are using the incorrect size labels.

  2. You are using the incorrect type of ribbon for the type of labels you are using.  The labels and ribbons are a matched set.

  3. Someone has loaded another driver for use with the Printer.  You CANNOT do this.  You must remove both drivers COMPLETELY from your computer and re-install the correct driver.  Installing Zebra Printer
