Frequently Asked Questions General

(FAQ)  Define Cash Register Module, Cash Register, and Cash Drawer?

Unfortunately, these terms seem confusing at first.

  1. The Cash Register Module is the part of the BookAccents Software that provides Invoicing Capability.  It acts like an extremely intelligent programmable cash register.  Not only does it allow you to scan books, calculate discounts, credits, sales tax, but provides Inventory Control, and maintains complete sales history.

  2. The cash register is a combination of the BookAccents Software, and either/or/ both a Pole Display and Electronic Cash Drawer.  When all three modules are combined, BookAccents acts very much like the high-end systems you find at the big chain stores.

  3. The cash drawer is simply a repository that has a change tray built in.  BookAccents will open the drawer, when necessary, at the end of an invoicing transaction.

(FAQ) Why do you rent BookAccents rather than sell it?

The real costs of this type of software is the leasing and updating of an ISBN Database.  We just combine the cost of our software with the ISBN Database, Software Support and Updates to BookAccents.

You can rent BookAccents, including support and updates for many years before you approach the initial investment required with all other products,

BookAccents is the best value in the marketplace today.

(FAQ) Do I really need Windows XP Professional to use BookAccents?

In reality, some of the other versions of Windows seems to run (most of the time) in a single user environment...  XP Home Edition, for example.  They work some of the time in a multi-user environment.

Since we have found that windows XP Professional works almost perfectly, we will only support Multi-user deployments of BookAccents when used with the XP Professional (SP2) operation system.  It only makes sense to get off to a good start using your software.

(FAQ)  What are Remembered Fields?

These are fields in BookAccents that allow you to change their values interactively/immediately.  (While you are running the program, right when you need a new value),  These value will remain active until i changed again.

(FAQ) How are ISBN's Processed?

In short:

  1. Lookup ISBN on local computer.
    (if not found locally)

  2. Check Database on our site via Internet.

See ISBN Database

(FAQ) Do I really need a full-time  Internet Connection?

It is certainly recommended, but we are currently working on a off-line batch method.  You will be able to process those ISBNs stored locally on your computer.

A "batch file" will be created for those ISBNs not locally resident.  When you wish, you can make a connection to our site, and process all of the ISBNs not locally available.

(FAQ) I currently own a bar-code reader.  Can it be used with your software?

Most likely, Yes. But it must meet the requirements to convert bar-codes as outlined in Scanner Setup.

See BookAccents Data Formats.

(FAQ) When I use your Hot Zones, Nothing Happens?

This Web Site makes very extensive use of PopUps.  If you use a PopUp Blocking program with your Internet connection you may need to configure it to allow PopUps from this site.

(FAQ) How do you handle books with the same ISBN having different retail prices?

If the retail price is appended to the ISBN as shown in one of these examples shown below, BookAccents will apply the retail price to the book you are trading, or for which you are printing a label.

Additionally, if the retail price (as appended to the ISBN )is greater than the retail price currently contained in the ISBN Database, the new (higher) price will be inserted and subsequently used as the default retail price for all new entries.

The price will still be overridden when a price is appended to the ISBN when the book is scanned.   Therefore a lower price could still be applied to individual books.

(FAQ)  Can I sell non-book items using BookAccents?

There are several ways of doing this.  If you have a UPC label on the item, it may be entered into the UPC Database, then the UPC is just scanned at POS.

A better way is to create a Bar-code label for the item, and scan it.  The system is fully implemented and all the reports handle this method of selling miscellaneous items.

(FAQ) Why do my labels peel off the books' spines?

Because of the high quality of the labels we sell, they have a certain amount of Spring built into them.  To help prevent this spine peeling from occurring, first crease the label by folding, and using your thumb nail to impart an obvious crease.  Now be sure to press on the part of the label that adheres to the spine.

(FAQ) My labels either print lightly or do not print at all?

The ribbons and labels we sell are a "matched set".  You must have the proper ribbon for the type of label you are using.

(FAQ) The data printed on my labels is not vertically aligned correctly.

This printer measures the difference in light intensity that occurs in the gaps between labels.  The printer must be occasionally calibrated.  Do Step 9 of these instructions:

See   Printer Setup

Additionally, when you installed the software for your printer, you should have specified the size of the labels and the distance between each label.

See    Label Specs.

(FAQ) Why do I need a label on every book?

Labeling each book does seem unnecessary until you realize the extreme flexibility you  enjoy by doing so.  During our past two years of developing and using BookAccents, we asked if we should develop an option to not label new books, but use the ISBNs directly.  We may still implement this feature in a future release.  There are several points:

  1. When each book is individually labeled, it can be treated as an individual inventory item.

  2. Each book can be stocked in a different location.  If you have four new fast selling books, you can display them in four different locations in the store.

  3. Books can be quickly moved, and their locations scanned into the database.

(FAQ) How will I handle Overstocks?

Store the excess books in bulk locations.
